The ADI Part 1 Theory Test: What You Need to Know

The ADI Part 1 Theory Test is designed to assess your knowledge of road rules, hazard perception, instructional approaches and the responsibilities of being a driving instructor. This test is divided into two sections:

Multiple Choice Questions: Covering driving theory, road signs, regulations and instructional approaches. This is divided into 4 bands:

Band 1: Road Procedure
Band 2: Traffic Signs, Signals, Car Control, Pedestrians and Mechanical Knowledge
Band 3: Driving Test, Disabilities and the Law
Band 4: Publications and Instructional Techniques.

You must achieve a minimum score in each category to achieve a pass.

Hazard Perception Test: Evaluating your ability to identify and respond to potential hazards on the road.

Both sections must be passed in the same sitting.

Where Self-Study Falls Short

Many prospective driving instructors opt to self-study, relying solely on recommended reading sources such as:

While these materials are invaluable, self-study lacks the structured guidance and expert strategies necessary for excelling in the test. Without support, the test’s complexities can be overwhelming, leading to a lower pass rate. The most common area for failure is Band 4.
